The Kerch ferry service, linking Crimea with the Krasnodar region, has been temporarily suspended due to an attack on a ferry in the port of Kavkaz. The ferry, which was transporting 30 tanks of fuel, sank as a result of the strike. The Russian Ministry of Transport has stated that the ferry crossing will remain out of service while efforts are underway to manage the aftermath of the attack.
The attack occurred on August 22, 2024. The vessel sank with 30 tanks of fuel onboard. Rescue operations have successfully saved 17 individuals, while two others are still missing. The Operational Headquarters of Krasnodar Territory confirmed that the ferry was struck by Ukrainian forces. On August 23, the Ukrainian Navy officially acknowledged the destruction of the ferry, known as the Conro Trader.
The temporary closure of the Kerch ferry service is expected to last until the Russian authorities complete the necessary clean up and recovery operations.
