Kilifi County has stepped up efforts to enhance food production by introducing affordable tractor ploughing services for local farmers, aiding them in preparing their lands for the upcoming planting season.

The subsidized tractor ploughing initiative is a joint venture between the Kilifi County Government and the Ministry of Agriculture, aimed at promoting Global Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) standards to bolster food security in the region.

During a visit to Lutsangani Village, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Peter Mwagona, revealed that nine tractors have been deployed to various areas in Chonyi Sub County to provide these services.

Mwagona emphasized that the program is specifically designed to assist farmers facing financial constraints, offering them access to mechanized farming equipment at a minimal fee of Sh1,750 per acre. This fee is significantly lower than what private tractor services typically charge, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on farmers.

Registration for the program is open to all farmers, with each farmer eligible for ploughing services on up to two acres of land. This inclusive approach ensures fair and equitable distribution of services across the farming community.

Kilifi County Agriculture Chief Officer, Teddy Yawa, outlined plans to plough approximately 70 acres in Mtwapa for maize cultivation, demonstrating the county’s commitment to ensuring a consistent food supply even during dry seasons.

Farmers in Lutsangani, led by Thoya Chikumbo, expressed their appreciation to the County Government for initiating the ploughing program, recognizing its potential to significantly enhance food production for both subsistence and commercial purposes.

“As farmers, we are grateful to the Kilifi County Government for implementing this program. It will undoubtedly help us prepare our farms efficiently for the upcoming planting season,” remarked Chikumbo.

As Kilifi farmers gear up for the planting season, the introduction of the affordable tractor ploughing program marks a significant stride towards modernizing agricultural practices, enhancing productivity, and ensuring food security in the region.

With the backing of the County government, farmers are poised to embark on a journey towards sustainable farming practices and economic empowerment, paving the way for a prosperous agricultural sector in Kilifi County.
