Police in the area of Urban West in Zanzibar have arrested 12 people for eating and drinking in public during daylight hours in the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Eating in public during daytime hours while fasting in Ramadan is considered an offense for both locals and visitors in Zanzibar.

The Acting Police Commander in the area, Abubakar Khamis Ally, stated that these individuals were apprehended following an investigation prompted by a video circulated online showing people eating openly in Mnazi Mmoja Square, contrary to the fasting regulations in the Holy Month of Ramadan.

These individuals were detained at the Madema police station for questioning before being brought to court to face charges.

Among those arrested are Issa Hamad Juma, 40, from Kikwajuni, Hamad Hamis Indole, 25, from Mtwara, Hashimu Bakari Nassoro, 35, from Kwarara, and Selemani Ismail Nalinga, 34, from Magogoni, among others.

The Police Chief, Ally, warned that the police would continue to arrest individuals who break the law by eating openly during this Holy Month of Ramadan.
