Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have apprehended a man suspected to be the mastermind behind drug trafficking.

The officers, who patrol at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa, arrested Mr. Salim Kalinga Mwinyi in connection with allegations of drug trafficking.

Additionally, the officers raided the suspect’s house in the Magogoni area of Kisauni and found one kilogram of heroin, marijuana, weighing scales, and Sh1.7 million in cash.

Police stated that the money, suspected to be proceeds from this illegal trade, was found in the suspect’s house where he and his wife were conducting this trafficking operation.

“At around nine o’clock in the evening, DCI officers from the patrol unit at Moi International Airport received information about the suspect Salim Kalinga Mwinyi and raided his house, where they found these items,” a statement from the police department said.

The detectives said that the suspect, who operates in the Coastal region, has been suspected of drug trafficking.

According to the officers, the suspect was a business rival of the late Swaleh Yusuf Ahmed, also known as Kendereni.

Mr. Ahmed was found murdered two weeks ago in an incident that the police described as a business rivalry.

The Security Department, led by Security Minister Prof. Kithure Kindiki, denied involvement in the murder and urged his family to submit the report for investigation.

“In this drug trafficking and distribution business, these two were major rivals, especially in the Magodoroni and Arusini areas of Kisauni,” the security report stated.

Police alleged that Mr. Mwinyi was using female school students, particularly from his family, to distribute drugs.

They also stated that two of the suspect’s wives have been arrested, and cases against them are ongoing in court.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, April 15, 2024.
