(UNN) – Suzha’s Lenin Monument Not Demolished, BBC Confirms
In the Russian town of Suzha, currently under Ukrainian control, the monument to Vladimir Lenin remains standing despite some damage from recent fighting. The BBC and UNN have reported that earlier claims about its demolition were incorrect.
On August 16, social media circulated reports and images claiming that the Lenin monument in Suzha had been demolished. This information was also shared by various media outlets, including Daria Zarivna, an advisor to the President’s office, and the Ministry of Culture. However, these reports have since been retracted.
The BBC has verified the current status of the monument through a video received from a source in Suzha on August 17. The footage shows that while the monument is damaged, it is still standing.
Fedir Venislavsky, a member of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Committee, stated that demolishing cultural monuments would be illegal. He emphasized that once a military commandant’s office is established in the area, it will ensure that cultural heritage is preserved and that humanitarian law is upheld. Venislavsky noted that violating these principles could be considered a breach of international humanitarian law.
