Lithuanian Prime Minister Visits Kyiv Ahead of Ukraine’s Independence Day

Last updated on August 22, 2024

Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė is set to visit Ukraine this weekend, marking an important diplomatic engagement between the two nations just ahead of Ukraine’s Independence Day. Šimonytė’s visit, scheduled to begin on the evening of Friday, August 23, and continue through Sunday, August 25, underscores Lithuania’s ongoing support for Ukraine during a critical time in its history. However, details regarding her agenda have not yet been disclosed.

The announcement of the visit was made by Ieva Skarelytė Eltai, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, who confirmed that Prime Minister Šimonytė will be traveling to Kyiv. While the specific objectives of the visit remain confidential, it is expected that discussions will focus on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Lithuania’s role in providing support.

This visit follows Šimonytė’s previous trip to Ukraine in November of last year, during which she met with Ukrainian leaders and participated in an international forum focused on Ukrainian grain. Her return to Kyiv signals Lithuania’s continued commitment to Ukraine amid the challenges it faces.

In related news, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to visit Ukraine on August 23, coinciding with Ukraine’s National Flag Day. His visit will further highlight the international community’s attention to Ukraine’s situation and the broader geopolitical implications.
