Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, indicated that the Crimean Bridge will eventually become non operational due to ongoing technical and security problems. During a telethon on August 22, 2024, Pletenchuk discussed the current state of the bridge and the challenges it faces.
Pletenchuk explained that the Crimean Bridge, a critical infrastructure linking Crimea to mainland Russia, has significant technical issues that hinder its full functionality. Specifically, he noted that while the road section of the bridge has been partially repaired following damage, the railroad section remains problematic. The bridge’s technical difficulties prevent its effective use, particularly for rail transport.
From a security perspective, Pletenchuk highlighted that the bridge is frequently closed in response to air raids and other threats. The Ukrainian Navy spokesperson also criticized the Russian-controlled barriers, describing them as a source of significant inconvenience for illegal tourists traveling from Russia.
Regarding the bridge’s defensive measures, Pletenchuk mentioned that the Russians have constructed at least two lines of boom barriers. These barriers are part of a broader defense strategy intended to secure the bridge but have not entirely prevented illegal crossings. Pletenchuk emphasized that the bridge’s technical and security shortcomings make it increasingly untenable.
An addendum to the situation includes a report from August 16, when Russian authorities announced a partial blockade of the bridge. Additionally, in July 2024, Kirill Budanov, head of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, advocated for the destruction of the Crimean Bridge, underscoring its strategic significance in the ongoing conflict.
