Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has underscored India’s potential to play a significant and constructive role in the peace process aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Speaking on August 22, 2024, after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tusk expressed his satisfaction with Modi’s commitment to pursuing a just and swift end to the war. According to Tusk, India’s involvement could be pivotal in shaping the peace talks necessary to establish stability in Ukraine.
“I am very pleased that the Prime Minister has reaffirmed his personal commitment to a just and speedy end to the war. We both believe that India can play a very important and positive role here. This declaration is particularly important because in a few hours the Prime Minister will visit Kyiv. As for this visit, we are all convinced that it could be historic,” Tusk said.
During the meeting, Modi echoed Tusk’s sentiments, acknowledging the gravity of the situation in Ukraine and outlining India’s diplomatic approach to ending the conflict. Modi emphasized that resolving the conflict through military means is not the answer, highlighting the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in achieving peace.
“We strongly believe that there is no problem or conflict that can be solved on the battlefield. Innocent people are losing their lives, and this is a challenge for all of humanity. Therefore, we support dialogue and diplomatic efforts to bring back peace and stability at the earliest possible time. India stands ready to work with other friendly countries to extend our fullest support,” Modi stated.
Modi’s upcoming visit to Kyiv, scheduled for August 23, 2024, coincides with Ukraine’s National Flag Day. This visit marks the first official trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine and is expected to be a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations. Modi is set to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and sign key bilateral documents aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
