According to medical experts from the Mayo Clinic, a heart attack occurs when an artery that supplies blood and oxygen to the heart becomes blocked. This blockage often results from the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries over time, leading to the formation of plaques. If one of these plaques ruptures, it can trigger the formation of a blood clot, which may then obstruct the artery and cause a heart attack.

The clinic further explains that during a heart attack, the lack of blood flow to the heart muscle can result in tissue damage and, in severe cases, death. Symptoms of a heart attack can vary but commonly include chest pain or discomfort, which may radiate to the shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw, or abdomen. Other symptoms may include cold sweats, fatigue, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath.
