Opposition leader Raila Odinga has contributed Sh1 million to support those affected by the gas tragedy in Embakasi, Nairobi County. The incident occurred on Thursday night when a lorry carrying gas cylinders exploded, resulting in a devastating fire that impacted a nearby informal settlement. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, whose constituency was affected, also donated Sh1 million to aid the victims.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura reported the explosion, stating that a gas-loaded lorry ignited a massive fire in the Mradi area of Embakasi. On Saturday, Babu Owino confirmed Raila’s donation and pledged an additional personal contribution of Sh1 million. He mentioned that more politicians aligned with the Azimio coalition are joining efforts to support the affected individuals.

Isaac Mwaura, who visited the affected area on Friday, conveyed the government’s commitment to pay rent for two months for families grappling with the aftermath of the tragedy. He offered condolences to the families of the three confirmed victims and stated that a total of 280 people were affected.

Firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control by 9:00 am on Friday after more than nine hours of efforts. The government, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross and Nairobi county government, is working to alleviate the impact of the fire on the affected residents.
