The aspiration of Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, to vie for the Nairobi Governorship in 2027 has received a boost with an endorsement from Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru, popularly known as Mejja Donk.

In a viral video clip circulating on social media, the legislator elected under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, led by President William Ruto, expressed his readiness to support Babu Owino if he is endorsed by the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition to contest for the position in the upcoming elections.

“At times when I’m with Babu, I usually refer to him as Governor… I am announcing here that if the race is between Babu in Azimio and Sakaja (Governor Johnson Sakaja) in Kenya Kwanza, I will campaign for Babu,” stated Mr. Gathiru.

The Member of Parliament is among the UDA legislators from Nairobi County who have criticized Governor Sakaja for poor performance since he assumed office in 2022. Others include John Kiarie (Dagoretti North), James Gakuya (Embakasi North), and Augustine Kamande (Roysambu).

In the video where he appears to be addressing a public gathering in the Embakasi East constituency, the legislator pointed out that 90% of the problems facing Nairobi residents stem from the negligence in Governor Sakaja’s administration.

“These issues you are complaining about should be addressed by the county government. Before coming here, we were in Dagoretti and the problems are the same, garbage strewn everywhere, inadequate water supply, lack of medicine in county hospitals, among others,” he remarked.
