The Kwale branch of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is strategizing to field a single candidate under the Azimio coalition to challenge the incumbent Governor Fatuma Achani in the upcoming 2027 elections. This move comes after ODM’s defeat in the previous election, where former Agricultural PS Hamadi Boga and other candidates under the Azimio coalition failed to secure victory against Achani.

Kwale ODM Organising Secretary James Nyakiti revealed ongoing talks to rally other gubernatorial aspirants, including Chirau Ali Mwakwere and Chai Lung’anzi, to unite against Achani. Nyakiti cited the candidates’ combined electoral support as evidence of their potential to unseat the incumbent.

The decision to consolidate support behind a single candidate follows a critical analysis of past election results and an acknowledgment of previous strategic errors. Nyakiti assured party members of meticulous planning to rectify past mistakes and secure victory in the upcoming elections.

Additionally, Nyakiti emphasized ODM’s determination to reclaim all political positions in Kwale, from governorship to MCA seats. The party plans to implement significant changes in grassroots leadership to strengthen its position and enhance electoral performance.

The incoming changes include the appointment of Sheikh Juma Ngao as the new Kwale ODM chairperson, replacing the incumbent Hassan Mwanyoha. ODM officials expressed confidence in Ngao’s ability to lead the party effectively and restore its prominence in the region.

Ngao, in response, pledged to address internal party issues, foster inclusivity, and uphold fairness in party affairs. He vowed to reunite estranged party members and rebuild trust among supporters.

Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, ODM remains steadfast in supporting Raila Odinga’s presidential bid in the upcoming election. Mwanyoha, the outgoing Kwale ODM chairperson, affirmed his commitment to defending his position and dismissed allegations of party mismanagement.
