Kenya Amateur Golf champion Michael Karanga is gearing up for the highly anticipated Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship (MKO), set to kick off today at the Par71 Muthaiga Golf Club course. Following an impressive 2023 season, where he clinched three majors and secured 14 victories, Karanga is eager to continue his winning streak on the golfing circuit.

Expressing confidence ahead of the tournament, Karanga emphasized his desire to make a strong impression as an amateur player, aiming to represent his Kenyan fans and sponsors, particularly KenGen, who recently provided him with a significant financial boost of Sh801,000 in support of his golfing endeavors.

Karanga’s determination stems from a desire to bounce back after facing setbacks in previous tournaments, particularly missing cuts in the Kenyan round of the DP World Tour. Reflecting on past experiences, he highlighted the importance of exposure and ranking points earned from international competitions in enhancing his competitive edge against foreign opponents.

Ranked 76th globally, Karanga’s remarkable achievements in 2023, including victories at the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay and Match-play championships, as well as securing the prestigious Ghana Open Golf Championship, have solidified his status as a formidable contender in the golfing arena.

As one of the four Kenyan amateurs representing the country at the MKO event, alongside fellow golfers Josphat Rono, Isaac Makokha, and Captain John Lejirma, Karanga is poised to make his mark in the tournament. With prior participation in the Kenya Open and European Tour events, including the 2021 Savannah Classic, Karanga brings a wealth of experience to the competition.

During the sponsorship launch at Stima Plaza, KenGen’s managing director and CEO, Engineer Peter Njenga, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Karanga, underscoring the company’s commitment to supporting talented individuals like Karanga and fostering national pride through their achievements on the international stage.

In anticipation of the tournament, Karanga exuded optimism about his current form, attributing his success to extensive travel and diligent practice.
