One person has been confirmed dead in a road accident that occurred early Sunday morning, May 26, 2024, at the Jolly Farm area on the Nakuru – Eldoret highway.

Jolly Farm is a few kilometers from the notorious Sachang’wan area, near the General Service Unit (GSU) camp.

A matatu belonging to Sifaline Shuttle Ltd collided with a trailer from behind as it attempted to overtake at high speed.

The accident occurred around eleven o’clock in the morning.

The matatu, carrying a total of 14 passengers, was heading to Kisumu from Nairobi, while the trailer was heading to Eldoret from Mombasa.

Other passengers inside the matatu sustained injuries of various degrees.

“We knew our journey wouldn’t be safe when the driver and other staff of this company began acting recklessly before the journey began. Then, when we reached Kimende, the driver started swerving recklessly among vehicles. We warned him, but he didn’t listen, and now he has caused this terrible accident,” said Mark Oloo, one of the passengers who sustained head and hand injuries.

A traffic officer from Nakuru, who requested anonymity because he is not allowed to speak to the media, confirmed that a female passenger was the one who died.

“Five people have sustained serious injuries,” said the officer.

The matatu driver is reported to be receiving treatment for injuries.

The injured passengers are receiving treatment at the Molo Sub-County Hospital.

The Nakuru – Eldoret highway has been experiencing frequent accidents.

Road accidents in the country continue to increase, with the number being higher this year, 2024, compared to the same period in 2023 (January to May).
